Rock and Roll Forever Foundation Executive Director Dr. Warren Zanes is teaching a fall semester class at New York University. For the second year in a row, Dr. Zanes and NYU Professor and Faculty Songwriter-in-Residence Phil Galdston are teaching the course entitled “Songwriting History and Criticism: 14 Songs” in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. The course is open to both NYU graduate and undergraduate students, who will examine songs such as James Brown’s “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag” (1965), The Beach Boys “Good Vibrations” (1966), and Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You” (1971), investigating the social, cultural, political context in which these songs were recorded.
The class is supplemented with material from Rock and Roll: An American Story, demonstrating teachrock.org’s unique teaching connections at the university level, as well as in middle and high school classrooms. If you are a college-level educator and interested in learning more about how RRAS materials can be integrated into your curriculum, please let us know.
