Civil Rights Lesson Featured on NYT Education Blog

The Rock and Roll Forever Foundation’s lesson plan “The Music of the Civil Rights

Movement” was recently featured in the New York Times blog The Learning Network.

The Times article, “Teaching With Protest Music,” suggests educators can enrich any

humanities course and increase student engagement by incorporating protest music

into their classroom work. Authors Michael Gonchar and Katherine Schulten laud

the RRFF’s philosophy of putting music in context. This approach, they say, is “a

powerful and engaging teaching tool for students, whether the goal is to better

understand a historical time period, analyze the power of lyrics and poetry,

understand forces of social change or respond to current issues.” “The Music of the

Civil Rights Movement” and more than seventy other RRFF less plans are available

at Teachrock.org.
