The Water Walker: A Brand New STEAM Lesson in Our Environmental Jukebox Series

While Earth Day is an important annual event to raise environmental awareness, TeachRock has resources to examine environmental issues year-round. Recently, we’ve added a new lesson to our Environmental Jukebox series –  a collection of lessons where students explore the intersections of Environmental Science, Art, and activism.

To create The Water Walker: Indigenous Wisdom and Water Contamination lesson, TeachRock partnered with Seeing Red Media to provide the official educational material for their documentary, The Water Walker. The documentary tells the story of Autumn Peltier, a Anishinaabe-kwe from Wikwemikoong First Nation on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada, as she prepares to speak at the United Nations General Assembly on the issue of water contamination.

In the lesson, students watch clips from the documentary, conduct a scientific experiment on water contamination, and consider the connections between indigenous and scientific views of water and its importance to life on this planet. The lesson is aligned for upper Elementary to Middle school Science classrooms.
