A classroom that strives for inclusivity prioritizes connections and community. But how do we foster connections between students? How do we create an environment for students to build a community? As a teacher, and a member of the TeachRock team creating our lesson plans, I’ve found that popular music can be an excellent gateway for students to connect in conversation and self expression. By having discussions about music, or performing music together, students can see themselves in their fellow classmates and share common interests. When students recognize shared interests amongst each other, those connections lead to increased cooperation and a community is created.
