These four lessons are especially suitable for the elementary classroom. Three of the lessons come from our Little Kids Rock partnership curriculum, in which students explore the history and cultural context of songs, and then can learn to perform them on guitar, keyboards, bass, and vocals. In “Blowin’ in The Wind,” students are introduced to poetic devices and examine how Bob Dylan’s lyrics speak to the social climate of 1960s America. The “Chain of Fools” lesson introduces students to the Great Migration, and reveals how Aretha Franklin’s Gospel Roots helped craft the Soul genre. In the “Hound Dog” lesson, students explore the song’s multi-racial history during the segregated America of the 1950s. “The Beach Boys and the Sound of the Suburbs,” uses the band as a case study of rapidly expanding suburban culture in the United States.
