Overview

Math is inherent in the music industry. Whether calculating touring costs, analyzing industry data, or determining fan engagement on social media, math interprets numerous aspects of the music industry.

Through five lessons, students practice math skills within the context of the music industry. Utilizing important artists as case studies, students gain a valuable understanding of how fundamental math is to the industry’s functionality, as well as discovering the many components that comprise the music industry.

The unit concludes with a culminating activity where students examine an artist of their choosing utilizing the math skills they practiced in each lesson, and then analyzing and presenting the results.

By working through this unit, students gain mastery of key math skills. Additionally, they gain a greater understanding of important artists and events within the history of contemporary music.
