Celebrations: Reflecting on Holiday Traditions with LADAMA

In this lesson, students will reflect on the winter holidays they celebrate, and share the traditions, food, and music enjoyed by their family or community during the holidays. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to sing a traditional Aguinaldo in Spanish and familiarize themselves with the ways in which children celebrate the winter holiday season, or La Navidad, in Venezuela.

Happy Birthday: Singing MLK Day Into Existence

In this two-day lesson, students will discover how Stevie Wonder’s “Happy Birthday” song became an international hit in 1981 and helped establish the Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday. Students will honor and reflect upon the values Dr. King stood for by writing a birthday wish in his memory.

Sun City: A Musical Force Against Apartheid

In this lesson, students are introduced to apartheid in South Africa and various international attempts to end it through Steven Van Zandt’s Artists United Against Apartheid “Sun City” project.
