Lesson Plans

Lesson 1:
Defying Expectations: Women Artists and Social Change

In this lesson, students explore how artists used creativity to defy expectations and inspire social change during the Women’s Liberation Movement. Students will analyze how individual barrier-breaking, collective voice, celebration of progress, and inclusive movements work together to create lasting change. Students will develop social awareness by recognizing how societal expectations shape individuals and communities and understanding that people within movements have different experiences. The lesson culminates in a dual portrait art project where students contrast societal expectations with authentic identity. Note that this lesson serves as a case study for social change and is not a comprehensive study of the Women’s Liberation Movement or the associated artists.

Lesson 2:
Sun City: Creativity and Collaboration for Change

In this lesson, students will explore how music has been used as a tool for social change by learning about apartheid in South Africa and the song “Sun City” by Steven Van Zandt and Artists United Against Apartheid. Students will learn about the conditions of Apartheid South Africa through informational slides and media clips. Then, they will learn about strategies used to stop injustices and understand the role that “Sun City” played. Finally, students will identify a social issue they care about and create either an activism poster or graphic novel to inspire others to take action and solve the problem.
